Makeup-Friendly Sunscreens: Top Picks for Every Skin Type (India Edition)

Your summer starter pack.

If I were to share one of my most valuable skincare lessons it would be to adapt your routine with changing seasons. This is a practice I have seen growing up, followed meticulously by my grandmas, even though their steps were simple and the product line-up slim. They would switch their coconut oil in winters to a lightweight moisturiser in summers or adapt to a refreshing rose-water face mask in warmer months, while doing away with the denser besan and honey pack. I have learned to lighten-up my skincare during hotter days in order to allow my skin to breathe and not turn greasy with all the sweat and humidity.

With skincare and makeup hybrids, I have transcended into my summer-girl-era, living on SPF skin tints. It does the dual job of lending my skin a nourishing and sun-protective layer while also adding a minimal-coverage makeup base.

However, not every tinted moisturiser promises the recommended SPF which makes the pre-makeup sunscreen layer inevitable. So whether you are someone who needs to cop an all-in-one product or looking for the perfect makeup-friendly sunscreen that allows a seamless foundation layer on top, we have got you covered.

We spoke to two coveted experts from the Indian beauty industry to know all things sunscreens and tinted-SPF. From finding your skin-type match to catching up on latest launches, here are the top tips to guide you through choosing the best sunscreen to wear with makeup.

The Experts

Harlin Sachdeva, founder and CEO of House Of Makeup, has over a decade's worth of beauty industry expertise under her belt.

A first-generation entrepreneur, Harlin has previously played a pivotal role in the launch of Sugar Cosmetics and Nykaa's Private Label. She also held senior roles at Unilever, where she handled many brand properties, including Lakme Fashion Week.

Dr. Natasha Vijayendran, dermatologist & hair transplant surgeon in Hiranandani Estate and Nirvana Gurgaon.

She has completed her MD from Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, Karad. Vijayendran is also associated at Re’equil as a consultant dermatologist.

Why Sunscreen Under Makeup Matters

The benefits of regularly using sunscreen

For any skincare maven, summers and sunscreens are inseparable, even under makeup. If you are a beauty-fresher, Gupta reminds us of the importance of daily sun protection, especially during the Indian summers. He says that “applying the sunscreen diligently, helps prevent dark spots and uneven skin tone caused by sun exposure. Continuous use of sunscreen can minimise the development of fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of premature ageing. And it’s essential to note that SPF also preserves the makeup’s appearance, as it  prevents makeup from oxidising and breaking down due to exposure to UV rays”.

A dedicated sunscreen tops makeup products with SPF

Gupta also remarks that “while makeup products with SPF offer some level of sun protection, they are not a substitute for dedicated sunscreen. To attain optimal protection you would have to apply a lot of makeup with SPF which will make your makeup cakey”. So unless you are offered an SPF 50+ protection, you need your daily sunscreen for preventing sun damage on Indian skin tones.

Sunscreen and Makeup: Busted Myths

As a beauty writer, one of my favourite jobs is to debunk the myths that blur the perks of a certain product or practice (of course backed with facts!).

Can you wear sunscreen every day under makeup?

Makeup hybrids, essentially the SPF-infused items, are highly likely to cater to a lesser SPF quotient, raising the question — can you wear sunscreen every day under makeup even if the makeup product has SPF? Sachdeva says, “ The short answer: YES! The long answer: Absolutely yes, because any makeup with SPF, including our SPF-infused tint, will not offer enough sunscreen protection. That said, it's great to use makeup with SPF for additional protection against harmful UV rays—but that is just an extra benefit for your skin, not a replacement”.

Does sunscreen make makeup break-up on your face?

Another frequenting SPF myth — does sunscreen make makeup break up? Well, this solely depends on your skincare, sun-care and makeup formulations, and the way they are layered.

For instance, if your products are oil-based, ensure that your sun protection is oil-based too, maintaining the formulations, help prevent caking. When it comes to layering, it is best to apply SPF before blending in your base.

More myths busted

More myths on sunscreen we have heard: sunscreen makes your skin look darker, sunscreen is not for indoors or on cloudy days, sunscreen causes breakouts! These are some more baseless myths that Gupta happily discards. “The right recipe prevents tanning and hyperpigmentation. If your skin appears darker after applying the SPF, read the labels and avoid ingredients like oxybenzone, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The Oxybenzone & OMC Free Sunscreen from Re’equil’s range is my top-tier pick for melanin-rich skin, as it neither darkens the skin or leaves a white cast”.

“Be it sunny or gloomy, fair skin or deep skin tones, applying and reapplying an appropriate amount of sunscreen is a must, everyday, especially while stepping out”, continues Gupta.

“Lastly, if your sunscreen is causing acne and breakouts, it’s because the formula is not meant for your skin type. Grab a bottle which is non-comedogenic and crafted for oily, combination and acne-prone skin types”, he adds.

Here’s how you can gauge the right formula for your sunscreen, based on your skin type and skin’s needs.

How to choose Sunscreen for Every Skin Type

Looking for a sunscreen-mate isn’t as easy as a left or right swipe, it’s more about multiple swatches and tests that ultimately leads to the one your skin loves. This process isn’t as fatiguing as it sounds. We have demystified the sunscreen-saga with following inputs from our experts onboard.

Dry Skin

“Dry skin is more prone to irritation from certain sunscreen ingredients. When choosing a sunscreen, look for formulations that include emollients and humectants like Prunus Yedoensis Leaf Extract, which soothes and nourishes dryness caused by sun exposure. Opt for moisturising sunscreens India that are free from common irritants and consider using those with modern filters such as Tinosorb S and Tinosorb M for effective UV protection”, explains Gupta.

Sensitive Skin

Moving on to sunscreen for sensitive skin India, Gupta says, “Look for a mineral sunscreen that will lessen the risk of breakouts, stinging, and burning-like reactions caused by various skincare products”.

Acne-prone skin

Sunscreen for acne prone skin india should have skin-soothing agents, according Gupta. He says, “look for ingredients that are non-comedogenic (non-clogging sunscreen) like aloe vera and Vitamin E  that soothe irritated skin and have anti-inflammatory properties. Look out for non sticky options that are oil-free and sweatproof. This also makes it befitting for makeup”.

Applying Sunscreen Like a Pro: Tips for Seamless Makeup Integration

Since your on-spot sunscreen has made its way to your roster, what’s left is mastering the art of application. The combination of makeup and SPF is the dreamy duo which you need for a lit-from-within look and sultry radiance.

On how to apply sunscreen under makeup, Sachdeva explains, “when applying makeup + sunscreen, your choice of products and the order you apply them in matter. Begin with a moisturiser of your preference. Then—and this is the most important step—layer your sunscreen well, not forgetting the neck and chest. Next, apply a primer if you want your makeup to hold longer”.

“Opt for a sunscreen with a matte texture that acts as a primer, helping makeup adhere better to the skin. This type of sunscreen not only protects from the sun but also creates a smooth canvas for flawless makeup application”, suggests Gupta.

“Then you can start applying makeup. The make-or-break aspect here are the ingredients: if you're wearing an oil-based sunscreen, choose an oil-based tint/concealer/foundation; if you're using a water-based sunscreen, go in for a water-based face makeup product. If you mix water-based and oil-based products, then your makeup risks pilling and separating.

Some products, like House of Makeup’s Face Anything skin tint, actually work well for both water-based and oil-based sunscreens, but this is a matter of trial and error to find products that are compatible with both”, she adds.

Reapplying sunscreen over makeup may appear like a stressful task, but trust the enormous beauty bazaar, with its endless products. “Once you're done with your makeup, you can apply a sunscreen spray or a setting spray with SPF.... we can never have enough SPF”, notes Sachdeva. My tried and trusted sunscreen touch up tips involve a good sunscreen stick. It’s super easy to apply and carry. Whether I am vacationing at the beach-side or just running errands out in the town, some quick glides of sunscreen stick helps me stock up on my SPF while also adding a dewy glow without compromising on the makeup.

The sunscreen mart is frolicking as ever with the cult-favourite SPF tints. To kick-off your summer days, these trending tints are a must have. With over pouring love from beauty reviewers and trials from our beauty desk, we have curated a mini-list of glazed formulas that combine tinted moisturisers with the power of SPF. Lending a sheer coverage, these tints nourish the skin and even out the skin tone. The blendable emollients create a seamless finish on the skin which you can top with blush, bronzer, eyeshadows, mascara and a gloss for a fun yet natural appearing makeup look.
